Birth & early life

Born at Winkfield, near Trowbridge, Wiltshire.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Westminster on the 26th of May 1854.

Age: 18.

Height: 5' 6".

Trade: Labourer.

Fair complexion. Grey eyes. Brown hair.

Service

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 29th of April 1855.

Sent to Scutari on the 12th of September 1855.

He is shown on a nominal roll of men of the regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari, made out on the 9th of November 1855, as being On Duty there from the 4th of November.

Rejoined the regiment on the 14th of November.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Dundalk on the 21st of October 1856, as:

"Unfit for further service. General bad health consequent upon repeated attacks of intermittent fever whilst on service in the Crimea, Is not likely to become effective."

Served 2 years 149 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year.

Conduct: "good". Not in possession of any Good Conduct badges.

Granted a pension of 6d. per day for 9 months.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

To live at Winfield, Wiltshire.

Not recorded by Lummis and Wynn.

1881 Census

The 1881 Census shows him as living at No. 8 Onslow Dwellings, Chelsea, London, a General Labourer, aged 47, born at Winkfield, Wiltshire, with his wife, Sarah Ann, aged 32, born in Martock, Somerset, and two sons, one age d 6 and a scholar and the other of 3 months.
