Birth & early life

Born in Dublin.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Newbridge on the 26th of February 1850.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Farmer.

Tried by a District Court-martial at Nottingham on the 27th of September 1852 for "Desertion, and losing his necessaries and theft."

Sentenced to 168 days' imprisonment with hard labour, and to be marked with the letter, "D" [i.e. "Deserter"].

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Mary Anne" on the 19th of April 1854.

The muster roll states, "Deserted from Balaclava on the 15th of March 1855."

The Regimental History records one man as "deserted to the Russians", and the Sebastopol clasp list shows him as "Deserted to the enemy."

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol.
