Birth & early life

Born at Milford, Co. Carlow, Ireland.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Dublin on the 7th of May 1838.

Age: 18.

Height:

Trade: Labourer.

Fair complexion. Blue eyes. Lt. brown hair.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Mary Anne" on the 19th of April 1955.

From Private to Corporal: 5th of October 1857.

Reverted to Private,, "at his own request", on the 16th of December 1857.

Sent to the Depot at Canterbury when the regiment went to India. 1st of September 1857.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Canterbury on the 13th of June 1862.

"Own request, after 24 years' service."

Served 24 years 28 days.

Conduct and character: "very good". Never tried by Court-martial.

Aged 42 years 1 month on discharge.

Next-of-kin: Wife, Sarah.

There were three children in the family at the time if his discharge. To live at No. 2 Heath Terrace, Hounslow, London, after discharge, but he was living at Deptford in 1864 and in East London in 1875.

He was awarded a pension of 1/1d. per day.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal, clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol, the Turkish medal and the L. & Good Conduct medal with a gratuity of £15.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol.

He was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal on the 24th of March 1860.

His name does not appear on the 1877 or 1879 rolls of members of the Balaclava Commemoration Society, neither is he ever known to have attended any of the various functions arranged by or for the Veterans' roll

His documents were returned to the War Office on the 20th of July 1898.

From the 1881 Census a man of this name was an inmate of the Liverpool Workhouse, Brownlow Hill, Liverpool, a Dock Labourer, aged 62, born in Ireland.

Further information

The Annual report (1868) of the Army and Navy Pensioners Employment Society shows that a position as a General Servant at a wage of 15/- per week and "all found" was obtained for him in London in that same year.
