Birth & early life

Born at Clinaslie, Co. Queen's.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Longford on the 6th of December 1845.

Age: 20.

Height: 5'9".

Trade: Labourer.

Sallow complexion. Hazel eyes. Dk. brown hair.

Service

Embarked for the Crimea aboard the H.T. "Wilson Kennedy" on the 2nd of May 1854.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Camp Razaoghur, India, on the 8th of November 1858, as:

"Unfit for further service in consequence of impaired use of the left hand by severance of the tendons at the back of the wrist by a blow from a sabre. Received in action with the enemy at Sindwaho on the 19th of October 1858.

Served 12 years 282 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 1 year 10 months

In India: 1 year 3 months.

Aged 34 years on discharge.

Conduct: "has been good during the time he has been in India."

In possession of one Good Conduct badge.

Three times tried by Court-martial.

Tried by a District Court-martial on the 28th of August 1852 for "having, at Sheffield, Barracks between the hours of 11 and 12 p.m., offered violence to Sergeant Major Clark by throwing a piece of coal at the said Sergeant Major, whilst he was in the execution of his duty." Imprisoned from the 28th of August 1852 — 10th of February 1853.

Tried by a District Court-martial on the 8th of May 1855 for "being drunk on duty." Given 50 lashes.

Tried by a Regimental Court-martial on the 18th of September 1855 for "drunkenness and insubordination." Given 50 lashes.

He was awarded a pension of 10d. per day.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

Served at Kotah and Gwalior.

The Mutiny medal roll in the P.R.O. states "Dead," but this has been altered on the India Office roll.

To live in Dublin after discharge, but died in the Cork Pension District on the 5th of October 1861.
