Birth & early life

Born at Trowbridge, Wiltshire.

Enlistment

Enlisted at Trowbridge on the 13th of February 1854.

Age: 19.

Height: 5' 8".

Trade: Cloth-worker.

Appearance: Fresh complexion. Blue eyes. Dk. brown hair

Service

Sent to the Cavalry Depot on the 19th of April 1854.

Joined the regiment in the Crimea on the 14th of July 1855.

Sent to Scutari on the 12th of September 1855 and invalided to England on the 23rd of September.

Embarked for India from Cork aboard the S.S. "Great Britain" on the 8th of October 1857.

Invalided to England on the 1st of January 1863.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, on the 19th of May 1863:

"Has chronic bronchitis. He suffered first from this disease in Nusserabad in December of 1858 and was soon after sent to Mount Abo Sanatorium but did not improve whilst there. He again suffered from this disease on his return to the Corps and being greatly debilitated was sent to England. He now suffers from a constant cough — is much emaciated and now totally unfit for further service. The disease has been caused by constitutional pre-disposition."

Served 8 years 260 days.

In Turkey and the Crimea: 5 months

In India: 5 years 260 days.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of two Good Conduct badges.

Never entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Never tried by Court-martial.

Documents confirm the award of the Crimean medal with one clasp, the T. M. and the Mutiny medal with one clasp.

Medals

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasp for Sebastopol.

Lummis and Wynn state that "he did not embark for the Crimea," but his name is to be found on the Sebastopol clasp roll.

Mutiny medal with clasp for Central India.

Served at Kotah.

Awarded a pension of 8d. per day for two years.

To live at Trowbridge after discharge.
