1528, Private John Worley - 13th Light Dragoons

Birth & early life

Born at Olney, Buckinghamshire.

Enlistment

Enlisted into the 3rd Light Dragoons at Westminster on the 19th of July 1838.

Age: 19 years 5 months.

Height: 5' 7".

Trade: Grocer.

Appearance: Fair complexion. Blue eyes. Brown hair.

Service

From Private to Corporal: 1st of October 1849.

Corporal to Sergeant: 20th of October 1850.

Transferred to the 13th Light Dragoons on the 1st of July 1853.

Confined 24th-27th of December and reduced to Private for "drunkenness" by a Regimental Court-martial on the 28th of December 1854.

Discharge & pension

Discharged from Chatham Invalid Depot on the 13th of December 1860:

"Unfit for further service - Labours under confirmed heart disease - the result of constitutional pre-disposition. Neither caused nor aggravated by mis-conduct. His constitution is such as to materially affect and interfere with his earning his livelihood."

Served 12 years 118 days, to count.

Aged 31 years 9 months on discharge.

Conduct: "good".

In possession of two Good Conduct badges.

Seven times entered in the Regimental Defaulter's book. Once tried by Court-martial.

To live in Little Houghton, Northamptonshire, but he was living in Edinburgh in 1875.

Awarded a pension of 7d. per day from the 11th of November 1860 until the 15th of March 1864. Renewed until the 11th of December 1866, when granted for "6 months final - not to be renewed."

Medals & commemorations

Entitled to the Crimean medal with clasps for Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman, Sebastopol and the Turkish medal.

Life after service

1881 Census

1, Allen Road, Hornsey, Middlesex.

The 1881 Census shows him as a Beer House Keeper (Seller) aged 64, born at Olney, Buckinghamshire, with his wife, Cecilia, 55, born at Aphelton, Suffolk.
